Original stone finish (22)

The Troll beneath Tewkesbury Abbey tower. One of many fabulous bosses in the largely 12th century abbey. The present spectacular lierne vault, dating back to 1320-40, replaced an earlier wooden ceiling and one can spend hours wandering around the abbey gazing upwards, constantly discovering something new.

The troll is just one of many such pieces of carving to be found there. This splendidly gothic fellow is uncompromisingly "in your face" - he might not make the ideal Christening gift, for example! When my three year-old daughter saw this piece for the first time she immediately said "It's Daddy on a boss!".
