Original stone finish (18)

Most of the carving on a boss would have taken place at ground level, only vulnerable delicate areas and details requiring precise alignment to adjacent stonework would have been finished with the stone fixed (called "Trimming In"). This might account for the area of unfinished hair on the top of this head; perhaps it was forgotten, or deemed invisible when viewed from the ground and thus ignored - anyway, the result is an interesting piece of architectural archaeology as well as a finely carved portrait!
